SInce 1985, the Foundation for Grandparenting's Grandparents and Grandchild's Summer Camp was held annually at the Sagamore Conference Center, Raquette Lake, New York, in the heart of the Adirondack mountains. Today the program is replicated nationally, and the program at Sagamore is continuing under the auspices of the Sagamore Foundation and Elderhostel. A variety of weekly programs run from July 1 to August 18.For information about the camp go to www.Sagamore.org or call Sagamore at 315-354-5311 for information about the program.

For those who want to replicate our program, our model  provides an array of activities both in and out of doors. Mornings are dedicated to nature hikes and outdoor activities. During the afternoons, choose swimming, crafts or music, or just relax with your grandchild. Napping is O.K. too. In the Foundation program  Dr. and Mrs. Kornhaber meet with all grandparents in the late afternoon to discuss grandparenting issues while the children participate in non-competitive games. In  successive evenings, there is a music "show," a night hike, a square dance a camp fire, and a gala "talent show" on the last night.  Activities foster the vital connections between generations and educate too, teaching stewardship  and respect for nature.

Dr. and Mrs. Kornhaber are available to consult with those who want to start a grandparent-grandchild program. E-mail them at gpfound@grandparenting.org.
